I've used the Mac version. Memory hog, runs like a drain and sometimes manages to lock the machine up. I only use it when I'm sent something AppleWorks or a text editor can't handle.

I doubt the real Microsoft alternative would be much better and I've got no intention of shelling out the dosh to find out. (Word 98 was okay - the last version of Excel I could stand was version 4 for the Mac).
