Monkeys, I think, are animals of which one can tire very quickly on a social level. Entertaining as they at first appear and comely as they unquestionably remain, in fur and form, there is about their features a malevolent glare, a greed and a message of selfishness that puts one in mind of dreadfully spoilt infants. There is a message in their faces that admits no possibility of affection on their part. They get attached to people, and scratch those who come close to their favourites, but you always sense that it comes from egotism not devotion. In our world, that is: that's why they make appalling pets. In their own world they are magnificent. [...] I suppose if you run a lodge in the middle of the jungle tame parrots and monkeys are more or less de rigueur. It worked on me: and to call them tame was to insult them. They were wild but chose to live hard by the lodge.
