Except that in the USA a couple of the "states" insist that they are not states, but are "Commonwealths." And most states in the USA are also divided into counties - except for a couple where the divisions are "parishes" instead of counties. And while most of the "states" conform (loosely?) to "English common law" at least one subscribes to Napoleonic common law.

But "aliases" are commonly used - with little confusion (for mailing purposes).
