Find the coverage maps for the UK and compare the networks. Probably not an issue if you're just going to be in the SE of England, but any rural / hilly areas and it is.
Most say they cover 95% of the population, but if you're based in an area where the population is thin on the ground, it's really an issue.
O2 / Tesco seem to be about the best in the NE of England for signal, can't speak for other areas / networks.
