The one we did was translated as overtly rauchy. A movie version probably would have scored a NC-17 rating. The language and graphic descriptions were really over the top. Even our vetern Drama teacher was skipping lines because he didn't agree with the gratuitousness of it. The one redeeming feature of it, was that the version had the Athenians portrayed as English, while the Spartans were Scots. All the Spartans' lines were written in Broad Scots, which is why I took all the minor Spartan parts, cause I was so much fun to read. And it was all Spartan patriotism stuff, an awesome break from the smut. Every one admitted it I hadn't read those parts (doing the right accent too) they wouldn't have understood a thing I was saying. One guy wanted to know if I had been brought up in Scotland (!) Another neat thing was that there are several pariotic Spartan odes at the end of the play that the translators had chosen to arrange to the tunes of popular Scottish folk songs, like Blue Bonnets Over the Border, Scotland The Brave, and Scots Wha Hae. I actually sang those. HA HA no one was expecting that! Fag an Bealach!
