Thread Name: Lyr Req: Garden Valley (Dougie MacLean)
Subject: Lyr Req: GARDEN VALLEY (Dougie MacLean)
I found the lyrics online and adjusted them a bit to agree with what Cara Dillon sings on the YouTube video. (See The Villan's link above.)

GARDEN VALLEY
Dougie MacLean

1. This is really not my home.
Oh, Where are you, my lovely Johnny?*
I'm afraid and all alone.
There's no peace for me.
I'm sitting in a stranger's room,
Playing at the stranger's table,
Shining empty like the moon.
There's no peace for me.

CHORUS: But in the darkness, struggle, cold,
I think about a garden valley,
Gentle as the leaves unfold,
Singing out across the bay,**
Distant and so far away.
There's no peace for me.

2. I'm blinded by your city lights.
I wander through these fearful places.
Colours fade to black and white.
There's no peace for me.
These are not the friends I know.
These are not their smiling faces.
In a desert that no-one should know,
There's no peace for me.

3. Now I know and feel it well,
The poor emigrant's deep sunken feeling.
Standing at the gates of hell,
There's no peace for me.
Burned out by their masters' greed,
Cruel exile, transportation,
Robbed of every love I need,***
There's no peace for me.

[* "Johnny": some sources have "Jenny" (depending on who's singing it, of course).
** "across the bay": some sources have "along the Tay."
*** "love I need": some sources have "love and need"--which doesn't quite make sense. How do you rob somebody of a need? Anyway, Cara Dillon clearly sings "I."

Recorded by Dougie MacLean, De Danann, Cara Dillon, and a few others.]
