Everybody is Irish on St. Patrick's Day, we say as we ditch work to catch a parade or sneak down to the pub for a pint of cheer in honor of the Emerald Isle and its patron saint. For more than a few of us, it turns out, there's truth to the tongue-in-cheek claim.
Geneticists from Trinity College Dublin have found that a whopping 3 million men worldwide carry a distinctive Y chromosome that links them to Niall of the Nine Hostages, a fifth century Irish king who clearly wasn't shy about spreading his genes. Only the Mongol emperor Genghis Khan is thought to have more descendents.
