When I was about ten, at a wedding, I heard my first real instruments being played, as opposed to lo-fi home and car radio quality. It was just THRILLING to be in the same room with the thing that made the noise. We've come further than that, anyway. At the same time, I noticed the incredibly bored expressions on the faces of the musicians. I thought then (and pretty much do now) that something was horribly wrong when this activity was so obviously tedious to the people who could do it.
