Good lord, Stilly. Well, I'm glad he made it.
I don't believe in raging against the dying of the light by the time one is old, though. I think death when it finally comes to the old is the kindest and sweetest thing that ever was. Pure deliverance. That's just my own view of it. I do not rage against it in the least. I will welcome it one day. I can't say if I'm right for sure about that. But that's what I think.
What I rage against is the injustice and blindness of the here and now, the idiocies of human society, politics, and convention. What I mourn for is the exquisite, achingly beautiful possibilities of youth that are fast fading...or are simply no longer even possible. And that's what I think death will finally sweep away. All of that will be swept clean by a kind and forgiving breeze.
I wouldn't say therefore that I would necessarily wish for anyone to grow to what is customarily called a "ripe old age" or to live into infirmity. It might not suit them the best, because happiness is not measured in longevity of years. What I would wish for them instead is that they might attain their fondest, finest, and bravest dreams while they are still young and strong enough to taste their sweetness in full measure.
(I realize, however, that those who have borne and raised children may have quite a different view on that....they're in a different position than I am.)
