About Iris and remembering what color they are when they stop blooming:

My grandmother would write the color with a pen or a stick on the underside of the green leaves. When the flowers finished blooming, the name of the color would be etched into the leaf and she could move them later.

I still remember and wish I had a particularly beautiful deep peach one.
