Thread Name: Lyr Req: They Call the Wind Maria
Subject: RE: Winds called Mariah
This one is in the DT (Digital Tradition). Go to the top of this page where it says search. Type in [call the wind]. When you are sure of a phrase, putting it in brackets [ ] will cause the DT to look specifically for that phrase. The DT looked for that phrase, when I typed it in and the song popped right up when I clicked on the search button.

As the DT tells you, this song is from the musical Paint Your Wagon, That gives it lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner and music by Frederick Loewe. It was popularized during the folk scare of the 60's and 70's by a duo, Bud and Travis.

The Rise Up Singing songbook lists versions by The Country Gentlemen on their "Yesterday and Today, volume 3" (Rebel SLP 1535) and on Kingston Trio's "25 years." It will frequently show up in Broadway song books. Of course, RUS gives you a rough chord structure for the song.

One of those "composed" folk songs. It just may seep into the tradition, but not in my lifetime I'm sure.

Good luck with the song.
