My information may be out of date, but I believe that in New York City the meanest subway-station vendor has access to better raised doughnuts than can be found in any other city. Krispy Creme did a fair imitation, and it was available in Boston for a while, but there seems to be no market for real doughnuts here; for the native barbarians, a doughnut means a toy truck tire, anchor ring, lifesaver, or boiled sphincter with sugar on it.
