Relative to pricing of goods in the 1930s (or you pick a date more than 50 years ago) gasoline prices are at roughly the same level now. What the hell are people complaining about?
European prices are almost double, Canadian prices are 30% or so higher. Automobiles are at least twice as economical to run.
