A Double Marathon a day a the age of 71!

John Dowling
An amazing 71 year old Great Grandfather, has been a race-walker for many years, he holds a total of over 30 world records and possibly the record for holding the most records!!!!
To name but a few of Johns records:
* 1 ,000 miles * 1,000 kilometres * 1500 kilometres * 3 day track record
* 6 day track record * 100 miles in less than 24hrs (completed over 70 times)
* Won 1 st ever British Veteran 10 k Championship road walk
* Roubaix 28hr race. 1st person to complete 10, 15 and 20 times
* 5 x Rouen 24hr race, at which the best distance was 207 kilometres
* Entries in the Guinness Book of Records
John has also completed the John 'o' Groats to Lands End, Lands End to John '0' Groats. Malin Head to Mizen head and Mizen Head to Malin Head, being the only person ever to race walk end to end on both Islands!!!!
The Millennium Walk is planned as his 'Swan Song', an attempt to complete the Irish end to end route from Malin Head to Mizen Head from the 4th to the 13th of September 2000 ..

This walk is in order to raise funds for Marie Curie Cancer Care, St Vincents Hospital Cancer Research Unit and the Retired & Senior Volunteer Programme, part of Community Service Volunteers.
Marie Curie Cancer Care - one of the UK's most comprehensive cancer care charities, providing care for today through nation-wide free home nursing; the largest number of hospice beds outside the NHS and an education for Health Professionals.
They offer hope for the future through research into prevention, earlier detection and better treatment of cancer.
St Vincents Hospital Cancer Research Unit, Dublin - is very close to Johns heart, they offer hope for the future by their research into prevention and better treatment of cancer.
Community Service Volunteers (CSV) - launched RSVP, The Retired & Senior Volunteer Programme, in 1988. It is a volunteer led, hands on, programme with over 7,000 volunteers operating in 30 regions throughout Great Britain. It targets mature adults harnessing their skills, experiences and enthusiasm and channelling this wealth of energy towards helping the needs of their local communities. John at 71 is one of our younger members. "Everyone Has Something To Give"
