Thread Name: Non Folk Session at Warwick
Subject: RE: Non Folk Session at Warwick
Coincidentally, I was playing with three other members of our ceilidh band (Unreel) as the main guests at Stuart Reed's monthly Acoustic Music Session in Brighton last night. Our set list included, among other things, several traditional tunes - and some (non-folk?) compositions such as:

Dimming Of The Day (Richard Thompson)
Da Slockit Lite (Tom Anderson)
The Ashokan Farewell (Jay Ungar)
The Spoot O'Skerry Reel (Ian Burns)
Waltzing's For Dreamers (Richard Thompson)
The Bay Tree (Andy Cutting)
In Continental Mood (Andy Cutting)
Flat World (Andy Cutting) - yes, we like Andy Cutting
Glen Kabul (Old Blind Dog)
Niel Gow's Lament On The Death Of His Second Wife (Niel Gow)

Loads of applause from all concerned - a very pleasant evening, if I may say so. So don't get your coat, Cllr! :-)

The title of this thread is perhaps slightly misleading - in the Warwick programme the session is advertised as:

20s to 60s session: popular music from the mid-20th century. All genres and styles welcome!

There's no earthly reason to exclude folk music from this - and nearly all the tunes I've listed above in last night's Brighton set would fit the session description. What I'm personally hoping for is three hours of friendship and fun (and beer), welcoming all comers who want to play some acoustic music of their choice in an informal and inclusive atmosphere. I don't think that this three-hour slot is exactly subversive, given the scope and size of the overall festival!
