Yma Sumac - purported Incan princess who had some incredible umpty-nine octave vocal range.Heard a rumor once that she was actually a Jewish girl from New York City named Amy Camus (read backwards) and that the Incan thing was all a marketing ploy. Years later I worked with a Cherokee man who swore it was true and that he had know her in NYC.
Whatever, the tales did nothing to diminish her unbelievable range and vocal control. There was one song, which the record jacket said was an Incan lullaby being sung to a dead baby. Dark is not descriptive enough, but it tested her range to its fullest. Hearing it now in my memory gives me chills.
