A far better term would be "folk police" because it captures the idea far more accurately, without cheapening any words. These people want to enforce what is called folk and what isn't - as police enforce criminal law.Just as on many e-mailing lists, the people who are always telling others not to post off-topic posts are referred to as "the topic police." Similarly for clothing police, etc.
