The supply of Dutch Herrings, a cheap food, to Britain was interrupted by Napoleon's invasion of the Netherlands in 1795.
Quantities had been exported to the West Indies, as food for the slaves. A prize was offered for someone who could reproduce the Dutch pickling process in England.
