You need to read some Ray Bradbury. Not quite sure of the title but I think it is "The sound of summer running", the last story in the "R is for Rocket" anthology.
It explains why it is necessary to have a new pair of sneakers as last year's pair are so full of memories and experiences that they have become too heavy.
