If you follow John's link and click on the painting it says it was painted in 1881. At that time he was in Auvers-sur-Oise and though I can't say for sure it was painted there the houses look more like Oise's than Provence's. We don't have those dark grey, pointed roofs in the South. Our roofs are usually made with red clay tiles, not with slates and they are much flater because we seldom have snow.
