HAVANA - Cuba has called a special session of its parliament for Saturday to discuss warnings by former President Fidel Castro that the world was on the brink of nuclear war.

Mr. Castro said last week he wanted the parliament to address his repeated warnings that nuclear war was imminent if the United States, in alliance with Israel, tries to enforce international sanctions against Iran for its nuclear activities.

Mr. Castro, who has also predicted a U.S. clash with North Korea, urged U.S. President Barack Obama on Wednesday to avoid a nuclear confrontation, which he described as "now virtually inevitable" in a posting on the www.cubadebate.cu website.

My take on the above...well, Castro might well be right about it. I have long regarded a US-Israeli attack on Iran as virtually inevitable no matter who happens to be resident in the White House at the time. This is a much bigger matter than Barack Obama. He's just the current PR "face" in the White House, the guy people voted for in their facade of democracy, and that face changes every 4 years or so, but the basic imperial policy simply continues on regardless.

If there is such an attack on Iran, I think it will very quickly turn into a nuclear conflict initiated by Israel and the USA, probably a limited one in the sense that it directly affects only certain regions such as the Middle East and possibly the Korean peninsula as well...but even a very limited nuclear conflict will kill millions of people and leave the (human) world far worse off than it's ever been in the past.

If it happens, it won't be just because of Barack Obama. It'll be because of the giant military-industrial powers that he is a temporary representative of. Obama's strictly incidental in the process, in my opinion, but he'll do what he has been put there to do. He'll carry out required imperial policy. If he wasn't there some other compliant tool would be and that person would do the same thing.

Strictly my opinion. You don't have to like it. You don't have to agree with it to make me happy or anything like that... ;-) I don't particularly mind if you don't. Doesn't really matter anyway. We're all just talking here. Keep perspective on that, okay?
