The truth is, you don't know that you did do it, L.H.   The operative word is "know" here. You may feel that her condition was severe before you were faced with it, but you don't know that. If it was indeed a severe injury before, you don't know that it was your efforts that effected a change in it. You may have a suspicion that it was very bad, and that your efforts had some effect on it for the good, but you don't know and can't know that. Let alone "how".
