This is the note to Seamus Ennis' version in the BBC rchive
PAUL AND THE FOOTBALL CLUB

Singer:
Seamus Ennis                1m.39s        13775
Dublin.
19.9.49 (R.V.A.G..)
'You all know my big brother and his Christian name is Paul/He lately joined the football club for he's mad about football....'

A modern humorous song, probably composed in the district of Kerry where it was heard.

Ennis would presumably have collected it when he was working for the Irish Folklore Commission (never been able to find out what RVAG stands for in the index)
The Hall and McGregor version was issued in the early 1960s - I think, some time after 'Bold Sportsman All' was released (late fifties).
MacColl learned it from Ennis.
