Fiddle and Hammered Dulcimer Workshops, All-Day Jam and Concert -- Corning, NY Nov. 6

-----------------------------------------------------

Hello everyone:

I am looking forward to a full day of hammered dulcimer and fiddle workshops, plus a potluck dinner, jam and a concert with my son. Please spread the word! Hope you can make it!!

Here is the full schedule:

Sat Nov 6 CORNING, NY

10-12 noon: hammered dulcimer workshop I "Getting beyond the melody" using 2, 3 and 4 note chords, tremolos, phrasing, dynamics, flams, fills, dissonances, basslines, syncopations, accent shifts, use of chord subs, bounced and hammered triplets and much more. (This workshop will go a bit slower than the afternoon workshop and is primarily designed for advanced beginners/novices through intermediates. However, more experienced players are welcome to attend as a wide variety of ideas/techniques will be explored).

1-3 p.m. hammered dulcimer workshop II "Arranging and backing up faster tunes" covering techniques/ideas such as adding swing, syncopations, accent shifts, adding chords, baselines, rag rhythms, chord subs, 4 against 3's, flams, fills, drones, triplets, drags, ghost notes and much more. This workshop will go a bit faster than the morning workshop but I encourage less experienced players to attend. There will be plenty for players of all levels.

3:30-5:30 p.m. Appalachian/old-time fiddle workshop: I recently completed a book/CD for Mel Bay on Appalachian fiddling. Following the philosophy of the approach in the book, my focus will be on using default bowing systems (e.g. the various uses of Nashville and Georgia shuffles, 3-1 bowing--up and down bowing, bow rocks, string-crossing, ghost bows, mid-bow pulses) along with left hand ornamentation (e.g. slides, triplets, grace notes, drones etc., double-stops, drones). Time and interest permitting, we may explore an altered tuning (e.g. ADAD, AEAE; DDAD). Some attention will be paid to bow holds and left hand position as needed. The workshop is designed for all levels of player.

5:30-7:30 p.m. Open jam and potluck

7:30 p.m. Concert with Ken Kolodner on fiddle, hammered dulcimer and hammered mbira and Brad Kolodner on banjo, banjola and guitar. Brad and I are just about to finish a recording of original and old time music. We plan on playing many of the tunes from the new recording which should be out in mid-November.

All events at The Drake House Studio Theater, 171 Cedars Arts Center located at 155 Cedar St., Corning, NY. $12 admission; half price for students w valid ID; Contact Debra at info@valleyfolk.org 607-962-4461 http://www.valleyfolk.org/

There will be opportunities for jamming all-day during and between the workshops. Hope to see you there! Should be a full day of music and fun!

Advanced registration for workshops is highly recommended. Send checks made out to: "Valley Folk- Debra Chesman" to this address: Valley Folk c/o Chesman, 18 Fox Lane East, Painted Post, NY 14870
