I think the modern Merc 4*4s are even less capable off road. Was it Clarkson who tried a BMW 4*4 off the road and found that many two wheel drives were more controllable and capable?

There was also a Morris Oxford Traveller woodie in the early days, up to about 1962. Later Oxfords were awful Farina tin boxes. You could drop an MGB engine and gearbox into one of the Oxfords (or the 10cwt Austin van, but those rusted instantly) with ease (it was very hard to get them into a Minor). Indeed I thnk there were some VERY rare woodie Morris Isis woodie Travellers, and they'd have had the 2.6 litre C series inline 6 cylinder engine, later used in the Austin-Healey 100-6 and stretched to 3 litres for the Healey 3000. .
