My recollection of this as sung by Norval Ripley and his group in Romford, Essex cica 1950:

What a wonderful fish the sole is,
what wonderful fish are soles.
Strange to relate , I am partial to skate,
like mackerel, they all swim in shoals.
But the best of the bunch the sole is,
yes the pick of the bunch are soles.
The best of the bunch, yes the best for your lunch,
are soles .. are soles ..

Of course, the music and pause pattern makes the parody effective but is difficult to show in the written punctuation.
