The story as I heard it was that Divorce was ONLY for the wealthy so the poor , particularly the Rural poor had no other way to sort out any Domestic situatin , such as the wife falling for amother man .
Problems might arise if , on the day of the auction the husband had set a nmate or two up to push the price up and the lover dropped out !
