Louis MacNeice's long poetic record of part of his life as it passed, Autumn Journal, contains a memorable summation of our view of the Classical world, "It was all so very, very different - And all so long ago". But never mind the Classical World. At my age [78] I often find myself quoting it of things I myself can well remember which just are not so any longer.
