Tanner, as Gypsy said, your friend will probably play a chanter for at least a year, before going on to the actual pipe. The Chanter is the portion which holds the reed, and is fingered.

For indoor use, it might be better to look at either the Shuttle Pipes, or lowlands pipe. Either of those can be played indoors. I've seen both available in A, rather than the more common pipe tunings.
