Re the musical interlude - it was a BBC rule that there had to be a certain amount of music in every hour, a bit like the certain amount of commercials shown every hour, and the unions (musicians union are very militant) got really upset if their members didn't get the airtime. And these were days when you couldn't get a job with any decent orchestra unless you were in the union.
