Steve Parkes: The length of a year - whether sidereal or solar (or more properly "tropical") - is a quantity that can only be determined experimentally; therefore there is no justification for calling it either rational or irrational. Unlike pi, e, and the square root of 2, you can't calculate it from a formula.
