In the Procrastination rehabilitation, I am still reading. The current chapter is "Are You Disorganized?" Well, yes, in some things and some parts of the house, I am. Not all, but definitely some.

Her "shortcuts" for getting started are these:

  • Talk it over
  • Start in the middle
  • Picture the end product

The talk it over part is the "thinking out loud" process where hearing yourself say something will often trigger other ideas, and conversation helps formulate plans.

Starting in the middle is good when you can't get started on a project that looks too big from beginning to end. If there are intermediate parts of the task that you can start with, then finish up the other steps, you'll generate the momentum to finish the task.

Picturing the end is the visualization that is so valuable to us; seeing ourselves successfully completing the high jump or the discus throw in the Olympics works, so why not visualizing ourselves in a clean and freshly painted and decorated office or den?

Right now I'm visualizing myself in the yard. I've hung up some clothes on the line, though I put a few in the dryer that need the heat to remove the wrinkles. Time to go push some dirt around.
