Steve: I seem to remember reading (possibly in a Dover collection of "Great Irish Songs" - many written by very un-Irish Americans) that Westendorf wrote I'll Take You Home Again, Kathleen in the form of a reply to Barney, Take Me Home Again ... written by an acquaintance.

I need to look at the book when I get home, but that's my memory.
