Benign neglect...it's how all of my house plants seem to survive. That and I will "euthanise" them when it feels as though there is nothing left to do. The hibiscus has travelled from Wyoming to New England in a refrigerator and then back to Wyoming ten years later. All my plants went in the frig, packed tightly in low cardboard boxes with plastic around the pot of each one with a shot of water. They wound up in storage for over a month and I thought they'd be dead, BUT when I got them out, they were very pale and spindly but very much alive. It was amazing. The hibiscus, at one point in WY, was clandestinely "trimmed" by Roger's horse. We came out to the sliding glass doors to find him standing there with it dangling from his mouth, pot and all. I was ready to kill him!:-) It really didn't hurt it, though. That horse caused a lot of laughs and tales.
Both plants do like lots of sunshine, esp. to bloom.
