Oliver North, a low-ranking officer (Lt. Col.), could not make the decisions but carried out orders; he took the heat for the actions of superiors and the State Department. All charges against him were vacated, and dismissed by the US Court of Appeals.
A decorated combat marine, he was awarded the Bronze Star, the Silver Star, two Purple Hearts for wounds, and the Presidential Service Badge.
Following re-instated full retirement, he has been an author, politician and TV commentator and host.
