As for the mushroom, it grows in a shape and has a texture which resembles an ear. It grows on elder trees, which is the tree which, in some version of the Easter story, Judas hanged himself from.
The naming was probably Judas' ear.
Whether it should be renamed is a different question.
In Chinese cooking, they use a dried black mushroom from the same family. In English, the packet labels say Wood Ears - basically the same description, but not personalised to a Bible story.
