PC taken to extremes is, of course, idiotic. But encouraging respectful speech is a good thing. Calling a black person a "n***r" or a gay person "queer" is stupid and rude, but not calling them that could also be described as PC. On the other hand, I know a couple of wheelchair-bound folks who hate being called things like "differently-abled". They are crippled, and call themselves so.
