My chorus instructors (throughout the 60's - junior and senior high school when milk was a must at every meal) always admonished us not to drink milk within a few hours of concerts, saying the milk would coat our vocal chords.


My own understanding is that dairy products do not increase phlegm or mucus, but may make it thicker and more irritating.
