I find that sugary drinks cause thick phlegm for me.

I haven't tested the situation regarding dairy products, but I have always heard that there is a negative connection.
I think it is probably a good idea not to eat much before singing. Unfortunately the pizza joint where we play and sing pays us in pizza and salad, so the temptation to eat during a break is very strong.
