Of course it's the marriage of a great melody with great lyrics that make a great song. For example, if we added an indifferent - or even just palin different - set of lyrics to "The Dawning of the Day" melody, I bet it wouldn't pop up on anyones most beautiful song list.
Interestingly, "Derry Air" did have different lyrics added before the "Danny Boy" words really caught the imagination.
