The parking backwards thing is all about facilitating the fast get away, if ever needed. It comes from the preparedness (aka boy scout) gene. I think we are witnessing the extinction of this gene, though as fewer men appear to be backing into the drive these days.

BTW, TheSiletOne backs into parking spaces randomly. He is nearly 61. I cannot ascertain what engenders the decision on the spot to park forward or backward. It is a mystery.
