Last Monday I was on my way to meet with the prosecuting attorney to discuss my grand jury testimony in the case of the woman who starved her 2 month old to death (I had seen the baby as a newborn and at one week)...when I got a call from the radiologist telling me that my 6 month old former premie not only had a recent fracture of the femur, but also old fractures of both lower legs. And the judge let the father/abuser out on bail. Some days are like that. Fortunately very few. But today I saw another baby whose low thyroid condition was detected early by newborn screening, and thanks to prompt treatment will grow up healthy instead of severely retarded. I hope you have a few successes, too. Though I'm sure it's often difficult to remember, many people are much better off because of you. I'm glad you folks are there.
