Yankee Doodle is being taught at our K class and a parent just posted a complaint about this line, so I had to look it up (I've always had a reaction to it without understanding the meaning of the song). Now I know it is not a benign, patriotic children's song, but rather a bellicose and sexist rant that was thrown about during war time. If the song won't be killed, I say reform the song (the tune is fine) with revised lyrics.
