John L. didn't really defend his title much in the 10 years but, what a character as well as a formidable fighter. Personally, and obviously only based on grainy film amd books, I regard Jack Johnson to be as good as it gets.
I believe that among afficionados Sugar Ray Robinson is regarded as the best, 'pound for pound' as they say. This is not to dismiss any other champions.
