Stereotyping in the sense of attributing weaknesses to a distinct group, the theory went a number of years ago, comes from the need not to feel inferior. Where no significant differences exist between groups in constant contact, both will create a stereotype of the other group by exaggerating in the negative whatever insignificant differences exist.
