If you are looking for small towns and beautiful countryside, drive a bit farther north (about 5 hours north of Philly). If you love the outdoors, Tioga County PA has been written up in Outdoors Magazine for their Rails To Trails. There are ski areas, snowmobile trails (and places to rent them), loads of great spaces for cross country skiing and in the summer the Rails to Trails is great for biking or walking). A good deal of the Rails to Trails follows Pine Creek, through the PA Grand Canyon and it's wilderness...it's absolutely beautiful!
