THE MUSICAL LOVERS
As sung by Dave Hillery, Gerry Murphy, Bob Morton, Steve Turner, Phil Bartlett, Bob Diehl, and Dave Howes on "Trip to Harrogate: Tunes & Songs from Joshua Jackson's Book – 1798" (2000)*

As I and Polly a-maying went along the greenwood side,
With some soft words we did consent that she should be my bride.
My instrument was well in tune and she in a cheerful key,
And frankly we did then presume to pipe a roundelay.

Each part did well in concert move; how brisk the time did beat!
Our notes such melting strains of love that she cried out, "Repeat!"
Our music was so charming sweet, we played it three times o'er,
But when I could no more repeat, she laughed and cried, "Encore!"

[* Actually, only one voice appears in this song. The names above are copied from the album description at Spotify.]

[Identical words are sung by The Mellstock Band on "O for a Thousand Tongues to Sing" (2011), but they repeat the last 2 lines of each verse.]
