Your persistence pays, Dave. I looked quickly before, but your post motivated me to look farther. Yes, Doerflinger has nice little biographies on the the singers. He does not say when he recorded Lant, but it looks like Doerflinger recorded a lot of these singers in about 1940. Maybe somebody who knows Doerflinger better can glean a date for this song, but I can't - and Roud doesn't list a date, either. Here's what Doerflinger says about Archie Lant: Archie Lant was born at Morrisburg, Ontario. Both his father and his grandfather, as well as his brothers, were lumbermen, and Mr. Lant followed the family occupation by "lumberjacking it," as he put it, "different winters" on the Chippewa, the Gatineau, and north of Sault Sainte Marie. Mr. Lant's father had been a raftsman on Lake Ontario and the Saint Lawrence; later he owned a farm. When I met him, Mr. Lant was living on the deep West Side of New York City. He is an especially tuneful folk singer.
