Many years ago, about mid-1960s, Valerie declared in the middle of the night while I just happened to be lying awake, with absolute clarity and in tones of the utmost certainty, & with emphasis and pause as shown ~

"The populace must be kept awake ~~ and amused!"

When asked next morning, she had neither recollection of any dream or train of somnolent thought that might have given rise to this portentous locution, nor any conception as to what it could possibly have meant.
