In 1962 John took a job as head of the science department at the brand new Interlochen Arts Academy (Michigan).

The chance to set up a school mingling arts and academics drew a singular quality of staff to this corner of the North Woods.

Among these artists and academics, John was in a class by himself as much for his talent (only ever displayed with modesty) as for his humor.
